The Royal Palm

Known scientifically as Roystonea borinquena, the Palma Real is a species of palm native to the islands of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. For the Forest, the abundant presence of this tree (near the Forest and in all Palmas del Mar) is important.

Many species of birds that play an important role in Puerto Rico’s ecosystems feed on the fruit they produce, a food rich in fats. Within these species are: the endangered Puerto Rican parrot, the woodpecker of Puerto Rico, the pitirre, the white-headed pigeon, the Turkish pigeon, the sabanera pigeon, the squeak, the yellowish squeak, the turpial, the clergyman, the nightingale, the Brown thrush, red-footed thrush, queen mora, Dominican parrot, Amazonian royal parrot and the white-winged parakeet.
