El Ortegón
The Pterocarpus Forest is one of the few sites in Puerto Rico where you can find the beautiful Ortegón (Coccoloba rugosa), an endemic species. The Forest and Palmas del Mar are also among the few areas in the island’s northeast and east that provide safe habitat for this species, which is listed as endangered in The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species.
The tree inhabits dry woodlands and coastal areas. It can reach up to 30 feet in height, the trunk is erect, and its red flowers are in a long inflorescence. The flowers and fruits appear during the spring and summer. The Ortegón can be seen around the Forest and throughout Palmas del Mar.
