Bromelia / Bromeliad and Eleutherodactylus Coquí
The Bromeliad is a naturalized plant. It grows wild and abundantly in humid environments such as the Pterocarpus Forest. During daylight hours Coquis are known to use the interiors of bromeliad plants for refuge and to avoid potential predators while they are sleeping.
The common Coquí is widely distributed in the valleys and low mountains of Puerto Rico. Its song is the well-known, “coqui-coqui” (ko-kee). Previously it was known as E. portorricensis, but they separated the species with the now coquí from the high mountains.
