Restore the devastated Pterocarpus Forest

Home / Restore the devastated Pterocarpus Forest

On September 20, 2017, Puerto Rico was devastated by Hurricane María, a Category 4 storm that made landfall at Yabucoa, just 7 miles from the Pterocarpus Forest.  Locally, María packed maximum sustained winds of more than 175 miles per hour, accompanied by torrential rains, causing massive storm surge flooding along the coast, not more than a mile from the Forest.

The 55-acre Pterocarpus Forest — one of the few such forests remaining on the island and the only one readily available to the public — was virtually destroyed.  Hundreds of trees were lost and the habitat for the many forest species of flora and fauna was devastated.  The 1.5-mile nature walk was severely damaged and hundreds of interpretive signs, essential to the Forest’s educational mission, were ruined or lost.

The Friends of the Forest will act to manage the Forest’s restoration so that, as soon as possible, the people of Puerto Rico will again have this gem of nature at their disposal.  The new Forest will be a place to witness and be in awe of the ecosystem’s re-growth and renewal.  At the same time, the Pterocarpus Forest will once again become an “outdoor classroom”, where the public can learn about this unique ecological system, the importance of conservation and the significance of a healthy relationship with our natural habitat.

Can we count on your support to restore the hurricane-ravaged Forest to its prior beauty and important role in environmental education and awareness?

Your tax-deductible contribution will help us to:

1) Continue to remove fallen trees and tons of debris in and around the Forest left behind in the wake of the Hurricane, to protect the forest from further destruction;

2) Salvage and replant fallen trees, care for surviving ones, and plant new endemic and native trees to replace those that were lost.

3) Rebuild the 1.5-mile walkway and replace the over 100 interpretive signs that were destroyed by the Hurricane.
