Restore the Pterocarpus Forest!

The Pterocarpus Forest, a rare 56-acre swamp forest ecosystem nearly obliterated by Hurricane María, is making a comeback! While Nature is taking its course and restoring the flora, fauna and beauty of this unique ecosystem, we need your help to restore the Forest to its prior state as a vibrant, engaging open-air classroom available to the general public for environmental education and to students and scientists for research.

We need your help to restore the cornerstone of the Forest’s educational strategy – the Boardwalk that winds its way through the interior of the Forest, making encounters with the Forest up close and personal. From the boardwalk, visitors can observe many of the Forest’s 44 species of flora and 52 species of fauna, of which 13 are considered endemic.

Six hundred feet of the elevated, ¾-mile fiberglass and aluminum, accessible boardwalk were destroyed by Hurricane María and urgently need to be restored.

Without the replacement of the damaged section of the boardwalk, the interior of the Forest remains totally inaccessible to the public.

Before Hurricane María — which made landfall a mere 7 miles away — the Forest was open to the public every day from 6am to 6pm for self-guided tours and passive recreation.  Guided tours were available with advance reservations. In addition, the forest was available and used for scientific research by university students and researchers.   Thousands of visitors were able to have a rewarding and enlightening environmental educational experience.

Our goal is to raise $25,000 of the $100,000 needed to reconstruct the boardwalk by International Forests Day, Wednesday, March 21, 2018 and to have the Forest’s interior completely re-opened to the public by the summer. Additional funding support will be sought from foundations and the business community.

Please make a minimum donation of $15 and help us to literally inch our way towards our goal!

A donation $175 will reconstruct one foot of the walkway!

A $500 donation will restore a yard!

Donors will be recognized, with our heartfelt thanks, on our virtual Honor Roll.
